Effectiveness of Platelet-Rich Plasma Based on Gene Expression in Knee Osteoarthritis
Authors
Abstract:
Background: Intra-articular injection of Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an effective method for the treatment of patientswith knee osteoarthritis (OA). This study aimed to assess the effects of PRP injection on OA, based on gene expressionanalysis. Methods: A sample of 30 subjects with knee OA was asked to complete the Persian versions of the Intermittent andConstant Osteoarthritis Pain (ICOAP) and Knee and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS). Thereafter, the expressionof IGF-1, HIF-1, cartilage oligometric matrix protein (COMP), and bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP2) were comparedin the patient before and 1 month after PRP injection using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR).Results: According to the results of the study, the expression of IGF-1, HIF-1, COMP and BMP2 were reported to behigher in subjects with PRP injection; however, only the up-regulation of IGF-1 was statistically significant (P<007).Moreover, the significant change in the KOOS and ICOAP scores was attributed to PRP injection (P<0.01).Conclusion: Intra-articular injections of PRP were reported to ease the pain, decrease the stiffness, and improvequality of life in patients with knee OA through the promotion of IGF-1 expression.Level of evidence: V

Intraarticular Injections of Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP)in the Management of Knee Osteoarthritis
The clinical use of PRP therapy in the practical setting of orthopaedic fields is increasing partly because of the accessibility of devices that are used in outpatient preparation and delivery. Another reason is the strong advertisement of PRP procedures as the ultimate treatment and novel technology for knee problems by a few orthopaedic surgeons based on claims of abundant scientific eviden...

BACKGROUND With increasing frequency, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) preparations have been used to treat cartilage lesions to regenerate tissue homeostasis and retard the progression of knee osteoarthritis (OA). PURPOSE To determine the effectiveness of intra-articular PRP injections in active patients with knee OA and to evaluate clinical outcomes in patients with and without previous surgical ...

[Purpose] To assess the effects of different numbers of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) applications on pain and physical function in grade 3 knee osteoarthritis (OA). [Subjects and Methods] A total of 102 patients with grade 3 knee OA were randomly divided into three groups: Group 1 received a single injection of PRP, Group 2 received two injections of PRP two weeks apart, Group 3 received three in...

Aims and background: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a major public health issue because it causes chronic pain, reduces physical function and diminishes quality of life. Knee osteoarthritis is a chronic disease and is one of the most common causes of disability in the elderly. Population ageing and increased global prevalence of obesity are anticipated to dramatically increase the prevalence of kn...
full textAdvantages of Pure Platelet-Rich Plasma Compared with Leukocyte- and Platelet-Rich Plasma in Treating Rabbit Knee Osteoarthritis
BACKGROUND Concentrated leukocytes in leukocyte- and platelet-rich plasma (L-PRP) may deliver increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines to activate the NF-κB signaling pathway, to counter the beneficial effects of growth factors on osteoarthritic cartilage. However, to date no relevant studies have substantiated that in vivo. MATERIAL AND METHODS Autologous L-PRP and pure platelet-rich pla...
